Résumé
De la peinture moderne au cinéma moderne

Summary
From modern Painting to the modern Cinema
Few people can have come to the cinema as unexpectedly and with as much inner resistance as did the creators of the plastic arts. Their only experience with cameras and films was to have seen them in shop-windows. In 1921 Eggeling completed the first version of his "Diagonal Symphony" and I finished my "Rhythm 21"; we were plunged into an entirely new means of expression with the cinema we faced not only the orchestration of form but also the relation of time. The single image disappeared in a flow of images, which had meaning on ly if they helped to articulate a new element: Time. These two films were entirely dissimilar, which goes to prove that also two different people, after working in close communion for three years, can arrive at completely dissimilar results, on the practical as well as on the theoretical side.
Ruttmann’s experience was different, although he - unlike to what Eggeling and I had done – had completely given himself to the cinema. Duchamp, on the other hand, arrives at cinematographical art from another domain: actually, the problem of movement (dynamism and simultaneity), as studied and treated by the futurists since 1909, was the theme of Duchamp's famous painting "Nudes descending a staircase" (1912). Duchamp, with his sceptical and scientific spirit had left art already in 1913, presenting his Ready-mades as artistic objects, as opposed to conventional art.
In the cinema, existing since about seventy years and without any tradition to consider, the problem of abstract form has in consequence not the same function that it has in painting. During the 'twenties all those who made films - Lèger, Picabia, Duchamp – in reality did it in order to discover the maximum of this new means' a possibilities, and consequently they used it with the greatest freedom for their ends. Under these conditions pure abstract form had merely the function of one possibility amongst many others.
The artists also started to study the camera's possibilities the composition and the so-called tricks, which already forty years earlier had been used by Georges Méliès. Although we, as painters, were faced by the same problems, we still felt the family-ties with this means. After the advent of the sonorous film, many painters took the road of collaboration between the cinema and painting, especially in America, where there were some really dazzling examples of the application of some pictorial doctrines to the experimental cinema.
I am sure there was an analogous evolution in Europe, but about this I have not much information.
From time to time a painter writes to me in order to discuss the way of giving visual expression to his personal views on the cinema: with new flaming colours, with new machines that could produce vibrations and irritations capable of amplifying the eye's perceptive faculties. But at present it does not look as if the main trend of experimental cinema followed this directions it is more interested in sexual and social problems and in the widely spread feeling of anxiety.
All the same, a new impulse could certainly bring new people and new ideas, pushing forward once more towards new vistas for the abstract cinema.
